The area surrounding Sierra Oliva offers unlimited possibilities for hiking, climbing and cycling. The path PR AB-50 from Caudete to Sierra Oliva is a circular route and has a total length of 21’5 km. The highest point of the tour is one of the peaks of Sierra Oliva, also known as Sierra Santa Barbara (1.141 mts). The route is sign-posted and can be walked in both directions: either by la Vereda de Santa Ana (St. Ana’s Path) and el Barranco de los Anteojos (the Ravine of the Spectacles), 7 km up to the summit on its southern side, or by el Camino de los Molinos (the Mills Way) and el Barranco del Paraíso (the Ravine of the Paradise), 14’5 km up to the summit on its northern side. We recommend you do the itinerary in anti-clockwise direction. You ascend to Sierra Oliva for its south side and descend for its north side. This way, you confront the major slopes in the first section, when you have the most energy and this way up to the summit is shorter. The path is sign-posted according to the international hiking rules for short paths: in white and yellow colours. On your way, you will find directional arrows on wooden signposts and marks on stones or on trees. Likewise, you will see explanatory panels at the points of special interest. Along the itinerary you will find a 18th Century ice-house, farmhouses typical to this area, cucos (shepherd’s huts), former water mills, many acres of pine trees and a varied vegetation uncommon for these zones. The views from the top of the mountain are impressive. Definitely well worth the hike. |
