Castalla Castle

Castalla was certainly settled by the Iberians and later by the Romans who called the town ‘Castra Alta’ (High Fort), but it was the Moors who established Castalla as a fortress town and constructed the impressive castle high above the town. The castle was probably started in the 11th Century and this would have been an important project as the town is in a key strategic location and would certainly have been an early target for the Christian forces of Jaime I during the re-conquest. Jaime I in fact took control of Biar first and then moved on to Castalla in 1245. After he had taken control of the town and its castle Jaime I made some renovations and improvements to the castle.
